To ask the Secretary of State for Education, whether she made an assessment of the potential impact on school (a) finances and (b) meals of the proposed tax on meat products before the Prime Minister announced on 20 September 2023 that this proposal would not go ahead.

The Department has not previously produced an impact assessment of the effect on schools of the recommendation for a meat tax from the Committee on Climate Change. The Prime Minister reconfirmed the Government's position on this issue when he set out his vision for taking a pragmatic and proportionate approach to reaching net zero by 2050, in a way that avoids imposing significant costs on working people while still meeting international commitments.
