The School Rebuilding Programme was announced in 2020, with a commitment to rebuilding or significantly refurbishing buildings at 500 schools and sixth form colleges. The Department has announced 400 projects to date, including 239 last December. The programme prioritises buildings in poor condition and with potential safety issues.

The programme is funded from the Department’s £19 billion capital budget set at the 2021 Spending Review. Further funding will be confirmed at the next Spending Review.

In addition to rebuilding, over £15 billion has been allocated since 2015 to improve the condition of schools, including £1.8 billion committed for the 2023/24 financial year.
