Department for Transport written question – answered at on 1 November 2021.
To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, with reference to the Transport Decarbonisation Plan, what assessment he has made of the potential merits of lowering rail fare costs when running costs are reduced.
Rail is already a green mode of transport for both passengers and goods and we are committed to delivering a net zero rail network by 2050. The Williams-Shapps Plan for Rail set out a transformation in how people will pay for their journeys in the future to encourage a shift to rail. We are working with industry to modernise fares ticketing and on long distance routes, flexible pricing will improve choice and enable cheaper fares at quieter times.
