To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, whether her Department has made an assessment of the potential merits of taking sole responsibility for the National Wildlife Crime Unit; and if she will provide long-term funding for that unit.

The National Wildlife Crime Unit (NWCU) is a UK-wide organisation which helps prevent and detect wildlife crime.

Core funding of the NWCU is principally provided by the Home Office and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. The Home Office will be providing specific funding of £136,000 to support the work of the NWCU in 2020/21. This will be in addition to the funding central Government will be providing police forces in England and Wales to tackle all types of crime, including wildlife crime.

Decisions about Home Office funding and responsibility for the NWCU beyond March 2021 will be taken as part of the forthcoming Spending Review.
