To ask the Secretary of State for Justice, if he will make each category of careless and inconsiderate driving an offence that carries a custodial sentence.

The government has committed to increase the maximum penalty for causing death by dangerous driving and causing death by careless driving when under the influence of drink or drugs to life imprisonment, and create a new offence of causing serious injury by careless driving as soon as possible.

Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
