Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs written question – answered on 3rd October 2019.
To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, whether she plans to bring forward legislative proposals to ban the keeping of primates as pets.
I recognise the concerns that have been expressed regarding the welfare of primates kept as pets, given the complex needs of these animals. Therefore, we will issue a Call for Evidence to better understand: (i) the scale of ownership of primates as pets, (ii) how they are acquired, and (iii) the merits and impacts of potential restrictions on ownership, sale, breeding and trade. The Call for Evidence will be published in due course.
