Department of Health and Social Care written question – answered at on 9 April 2018.
To ask Her Majesty's Government whether they intend to ensure that the public health protections available to UK citizens under Article 168 of the Lisbon Treaty will be enshrined in UK law following the UK's exit from the EU.
The Government is committed to ensuring a high level of public health protection is maintained as we exit the European Union. The United Kingdom has a strong public health framework and leads Europe in many aspects of health protection and promotion. As the Secretary of State has set out, the Government’s principles as we exit the EU are that patients are not disadvantaged and patient safety remains at the heart of all we do. The Secretary of State has a statutory duty to take all steps that he considers appropriate to protect the health of the public in England from disease or other dangers to health.
The UK is also a signatory to, and is bound by, International Health Regulations which set out core capacities for World Health Organization member states, to ‘prevent, protect against, control and provide a public health response to the international spread of disease.’ The UK will also continue cooperation in international forums, such as the World Health Organization.
