To ask Her Majesty's Government whether parts have been cannibalised from submarines in build to ensure those in service are operational; if so, whether any such instances have delayed build; and what are the costs of any such delays.

The redistribution of parts in the Astute programme occurs only when there is absolutely no alternative to meet the urgent needs of our in-service submarines. Delays caused by the removal of parts from in-build submarines have been reduced where possible. Based on information provided by the Ministry of Defence, the National Audit Office reported that the removal of parts from in-build submarines led to an estimated £40 million cost increase across the programme.
