NHS England has a legal duty to commission National Health Service dental services to meet local need and people living in care homes may, if able, access care through high street dental provision. NHS England is expected, where an individual is unable to leave his or her home or care home, to commission appropriate domiciliary services.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence ‘Oral Health in Care Homes’ quality standard is available at:

https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/qs151/chapter/Quality-statement-1-Oral-health-assessment-in-care-homes

This provides guidance to care home staff on assessing the oral health needs of patients on admission and advises on the need for residents to be helped to find a dentist if they do not already have one.
