To ask Her Majesty's Government how many children attending (1) primary, and (2) secondary schools, were (a) temporarily excluded, and (b) permanently excluded, from school, in each of the last three years.

Table 1, attached, of the National Statistics release ‘Permanent and fixed-period exclusions in England 2015 to 2016’ contains the number of primary and secondary school pupils with permanent and fixed-period exclusions. Data for the year 2016/17 is not yet available.

The table shows that the rate of permanent exclusions across all state-funded primary, secondary and special schools has increased over recent years, from 0.06% in 2013/14 to 0.08% in 2015/16. The rate of fixed period exclusions across all state-funded primary, secondary and special schools has also increased from 3.50% in 2013/14 to 4.29% in 2015/16.

Data regarding the number of temporary and permanent exclusions for pupils enrolled in independent schools is not held centrally.
