Foreign and Commonwealth Office written question – answered at on 1 February 2018.
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, what steps his Department has taken to encourage the Chinese authorities to respect freedom of religion and all religious faiths in Hong Kong.
Freedom of religion is guaranteed under both the Sino-British Joint Declaration and Hong Kong's Basic Law. We welcome the Chief Executive's emphasis on upholding the core values and structures that underpin 'One Country, Two Systems'. It is essential that Hong Kong continues to enjoy, and is seen to enjoy, the high degree of autonomy of rule of law, and the rights and freedoms, enshrined in the Basic Law and guaranteed in International Law by the Joint Declaration. Our officials in Hong Kong and London will continue to monitor this issue closely.
