Ministry of Justice written question – answered at on 28 November 2017.
To ask the Secretary of State for Justice, how many (a) Romanian, (b) Bulgarian, (c) Polish and (d) Croatian nationals were convicted of offences in the UK in each of the last 3 years.
Any foreign national who comes to our country and abuses our hospitality by breaking the law should be in no doubt of our determination to deport them. Since 2010 more than 38,000 have been removed from prisons, Immigration Removal Centres and the community, and last year a record number of over 6,300 were removed.
Information on convictions in England and Wales for these four nationalities is not held centrally and can only be obtained at disproportionate cost. However, information is available on the total number of foreign prisoners held by HM Prison and Probation Service in England and Wales; this can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/offender-management-statistics-quarterly-april-to-june-2017. This information provides the total number of prisoners by nationality, with the total including unconvicted, convicted, and sentenced prisoners. In relation to convictions in Scotland and Northern Ireland, these are matters for the respective devolved administrations.
