To ask the Secretary of State for Health, how many full inspections of NHS trusts and foundation trusts the Care Quality Commission undertook in 2016-17, and in each of the previous three financial years; and how many inspections in each year were (a) outstanding, (b) good, (c) requires improvement and (d) inadequate.
Number of CQC comprehensive inspections and ratings of NHS trusts and foundation trusts
Number of comprehensive inspections
Total number of Outstanding
Total number of Good
Total number of Requires Improvement
Total number of Inadequate
Not formally rated
The numbers above include all CQC ratings that have been awarded which covers first ratings and subsequent ratings issued which may have changed in some cases.
It also includes inspections that were carried out when the new inspection methodology was being implemented and as such formal ratings were not awarded.
The 33 ‘awaiting rating’ for 2016/17 means that these trusts have been inspected, but their rating is still being assessed and agreed.
The CQC completed its comprehensive inspection programme of all acute NHS trusts in England in March 2016 so any acute trusts that are awaiting rating will have been the subject of re-inspection.
