To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what steps he is taking to encourage more cyclists to use cycle lanes rather than cycling on the main highway; and if he will make a statement.

Cycle tracks, where provided, offer cyclists an alternative to cycling in the carriageway. However, the decision to use a lane or not will depend on the individual. We have no plans to make to make the use of lanes mandatory.

Generally, cycle lanes are more dangerous than cycling on the carriageway. They encourage the cyclist to ride too close to the kerb where they are out of the view of motorists emerging from side roads, they accumulate the detritus of the road as general traffic does not sweep it into the gutter giving rise to punctures and they give the impression that the cyclist is not entitled to be on the carriageway. Where do motorists park - often in cycle lanes - so where are cyclists supposed to go? Motorists like cycle lanes because "they get cyclists out of the way" - that is until they turn into a side road and knock the cyclist they haven't seen off his bike because he was out of the motorist's line of sight (I've been knocked off my bike 5 times by motorists turning into or coming out of side roads).
