Home Office written question – answered on 18th September 2015.
To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, how many cases of suspected forced marriage have been reported by the forced marriage unit to the police for investigation and possible prosecution in the last 12 months for which figures are available.
The UK is a world-leader in the fight to stamp out this brutal practice, with our Forced Marriage Unit (FMU) leading efforts to combat forced marriage both at home and abroad. In 2014, the FMU gave advice or support related to a possible forced marriage in 1,267 cases. To provide a breakdown on the nature of the assistance provided, including referrals to the police, would incur a disproportionate cost.
