Department for Transport written question – answered on 2nd July 2015.
To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what steps he plans to take to prevent bus companies reducing bus routes and services in the North East.
The bus market outside London is deregulated and decisions regarding the provision of individual bus services is primarily a commercial matter for bus operators.
Local authorities also have powers to subsidise services they consider socially necessary and spend over £300m per year doing so. They are best placed to decide how to support non-commercial bus services, taking into account local priorities.
