To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, if she will make an assessment of the potential implications for her policies of the introduction of a 28-day time limit on immigration detention.

It is Government policy that there is a presumption in favour of liberty when exercising detention powers under immigration legislation. Parliament voted on introducing a limit on detention of 60 days during the passage of the Immigration Act. This amendment was rejected with a majority of over 300.
