To ask the Secretary of State for Health, what steps his Department is taking to support teenagers with epilepsy.
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guideline The diagnosis and management of the epilepsies in adults and children in primary and secondary care, published in January 2012, sets out best practice for clinicians in the diagnosis, treatment and care of children, young people and adults with epilepsy.
The guidance sets out that the physical, psychological and social needs of young people with epilepsy should always be considered by healthcare professionals. Attention should be paid to their relationships with family and friends, and at school. In addition, the guidance makes clear that teenagers with epilepsy should have a named clinician to support transition to adult services.
