Justice written question – answered at on 14 July 2014.
To ask the Secretary of State for Justice how many people served as magistrates in each of the last five years for which figures are available.
The total numbers of magistrates serving in England and Wales in each of the past five years is as follows:
Number | |
2013-14 | 21,613 |
2012-13 | 23,244 |
2011-12 | 25,155 |
2010-11 | 26,966 |
2009-10 | 29,270 |
The reduction in the overall number of serving magistrates is a natural consequence of falling workloads in the magistrates courts, due to factors such as falling crime combined with the relatively steady levels of retirements and resignations.
