The six years between April 2008 and April 2014 has seen a strengthening of the donation programme; increasing donation rates by 63% and transplant rates by 47%. The number of people registering for organ donation has increased by over 3 million since 2010 to over 20 million. NHS Blood and Transplant launched a United Kingdom strategy in July 2013, “Taking Organ Transplantation to 2020” that sets the agenda for increasing organ donation and transplantation rates over the next seven years. This includes an aim to transplant 5% more of the organs offered from donors through work to increase the number of organs retrieved, offered and accepted for transplant.
