To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what estimate he has made of the through life cost of the Lightning II project.

The incremental nature of the F-35 approvals means that the total cost of the programme is updated after each Main Gate is endorsed. The UK F-35 programme is scheduled to seek financial approval for its fifth and final main gate in 2017. At this point the overall cost of the programme will be published. While the Ministry of Defence maintains a detailed through-life cost estimate for the programme which forecasts all Main Gates it does not publish these figures ahead of formal contract negotiation. I am withholding the information as its disclosure would prejudice commercial interests.
