To ask Her Majesty’s Government what estimate they have made of the number of care homes for the elderly that have wi-fi internet access; whether they intend to make it a legal requirement for care homes to provide internet access; and whether they intend to require the publication of quality of life standards for care homes that go beyond standards of treatment, staffing, safety and management.

Data on the number of care homes for the elderly that have wi-fi internet access are not collected. We do not intend to introduce legislation to require care homes to provide internet access or to publish quality of life standards.

The quality of services provided in care homes is regulated and inspected by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). New Fundamental Standards will set out the line below which care must not fall and will, subject to Parliament, require all health and adult social care providers registered with the CQC to ensure that care is person- centred and people are treated with dignity and respect. Care providers registered with the CQC will also be required to display the rating given to them by the CQC following inspection, which will specify whether the provider is outstanding, good, requires improvement or inadequate.
