To ask the Secretary of State for Health how much was spent on medical research by the (a) National Institute for Health Research and (b) Medical Research Council, broken down by category in each case in the latest period for which figures are available.
Spend on research funded directly by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) is categorised by Health Research Classification System (HRCS) health categories. NIHR expenditure on research infrastructure and systems where spend cannot be attributed to health categories is excluded. The following table shows NIHR spend in health categories in 2012-13.
