To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what reports he has received on the arrest of the lawyer Abdulmonim Adam in Sudan; and what representations he is making to ensure that Mr Abdulmonim Adam receives access to legal advice and representation.

We are aware of reports that Abdulmonim Adam was arrested for writing about the recent demonstration at the University of Khartoum which resulted in the death of a student. Although we have not raised this specific case, my officials and I have, and will continue to, regularly stress the importance of protecting human rights with the Government of Sudan, and highlight our concerns and their responsibilities in accordance with the constitution of Sudan. On 26 March, I met the UN Independent Expert on Human Rights for Sudan, Professor Mashood Baderin, to encourage the UN to play a leading role in monitoring and protecting human rights in Sudan.
