Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs written question – answered at on 13 March 2014.
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what recent reports he has received of human rights abuses in Iran; if he will raise that matter at the United Nations; and if he will make a statement.
Despite some small but positive initial steps by President Rouhani, the human rights situation in Iran remains dire. The latest report by the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Iran, Dr Shaheed, is due to be published within the next week. The UK will be making a statement on human rights in Iran during the current session of the UN Human Rights Council, and will be co-sponsoring the resolution to extend the mandate of the Special Rapporteur for a further year.
