To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many midwives from overseas have registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council in each of the last five years.
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is an independent body and responsible for matters concerning the discharge of its statutory duties, including registration of nurses and midwives who meet the required standards of education and practice. Statistical information about NMC registrations is not collected by the Department. However, the NMC advises that during calendar years 2009 to 2013, one midwife trained in a country outside of the European economic area joined the NMC register in 2011.
