House of Lords written question – answered on 25th February 2014.
To ask Her Majesty’s Government what proportion of legal aid funding for legal representation of individuals is spent in respect of individuals who do not hold any previous convictions.
The Legal Aid Agency does not record whether recipients of legal aid hold previous convictions. There is no legal or business requirement for the agency to hold prior conviction information. In the consideration of legal aid eligibility the agency assesses a person's overall financial circumstances. I am therefore unable to provide the figures requested.
