Environment Food and Rural Affairs written question – answered at on 3 February 2014.
To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs what assessment he has made of the potential effects of carbon emissions from damaged peatlands; and whether his Department has quantified those effects.
The effect of carbon emissions from damaged peatlands has not been quantified. Natural England estimates that in their current state English peatlands are responsible for the emission of around 3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent a year. This equates to less than 1% of annual UK greenhouse gas emissions.
