To ask the Secretary of State for Health what assessment his Department has made of the relationship between depression and (a) type I diabetes and (b) type II diabetes.
The Government are aware that being diagnosed and living with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes can have a huge impact on an individual's psychological wellbeing, with depression being approximately two times more common in people with diabetes. Nearly one in five people with diabetes have clinical depression.
“The Diabetes in adults quality standard”, published by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, sets out that as part of their care, people with diabetes should be assessed for psychological problems, which should then be managed appropriately.
