It is lawful to sell alcohol under an appropriate licence. It is a long-standing tradition that people are free to gather together and to demonstrate their views, provided that they do so within the law. Rights to peaceful protest do not extend to violent or threatening behaviour. The police have powers to act in respect of a broad canvas of criminal offences relating to public disorder.
