To ask the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions what steps he is taking to ensure the provision of low-cost funeral payments in the transfer of the social fund budgeting and crisis loans arrangements to local authorities; and if he will make a statement.

Social fund budgeting loans have not been transferred to local authorities; they remain the responsibility of the Department and continue to be available to eligible claimants in receipt of an appropriate qualifying benefit and can be used to help with the cost of a funeral. Similarly, national social fund funeral payments also continue to be available from the Department to eligible claimants in receipt of an appropriate qualifying benefit. Crisis loans, which were never available for funeral arrangements, have been abolished and funding transferred to local authorities for new, better targeted local provision.
