Energy and Climate Change written question – answered at on 19 December 2013.
To ask the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change pursuant to his answer of 28 November 2013, Official Report, column 394, on energy costs, what the evidential basis for the statement is that there has been a huge increase in wholesale gas prices.
DECC's March 2013 report “Estimated impacts of energy and climate change policies on energy prices and bills”1, shows that wholesale gas prices increased by over 35% in real terms between 2010 and 2012. This is a substantial rise, especially when the impact on household energy bills is considered.
The report finds that average household energy (gas and electricity) bills are estimated to have increased by around 13% in real terms between 2010 and 2012, with around 60% of this increase due to increases in wholesale energy costs.
