To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what steps he is taking to support cycling.

The Coalition Government has done a huge amount to encourage and support cycling in England. Since 2010, we have provided over £277m of funding directly for cycling, almost twice that provided by the previous administration, and have allocated £600m to the Local Sustainable Transport Fund, where 94 out of the 96 projects include a cycling element. I champion cycling within Government and work closely with local authorities, cycling groups and Ministers across Whitehall to encourage more people to cycle more safely, more often.

Secretary of State

Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.

Whitehall

Whitehall is a wide road that runs through the heart of Westminster, starting at Trafalgar square and ending at Parliament. It is most often found in Hansard as a way of referring to the combined mass of central government departments, although many of them no longer have buildings on Whitehall itself.
