To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how much from the public purse was received by (a) British Rail and (b) each other rail company in the UK in each year since 1983.

Information dating back to 1983 is not readily available. However, details of the aggregate level of Government financial support to, and income from the rail industry dating back to 1985-86 is published on the Office of Rail Regulation's (ORR)website at

http://dataportal.orr.gov.uk/

In addition, detailed historic information on franchise payments and premiums in respect of individual train operating companies dating back to 1999-2000 is also available on the ORR's website.
