To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what comparison his Department has made between investment in High Speed 2 and investing the same amount in upgrading track gauges and associated works across the network in order to increase capacity.

The Department has considered, on several occasions, a range of high level alternative packages to HS2, most recently in the Atkins study 'High Speed Rail Strategic Alternatives: Update Following consultation' which is available on the Department's website.

Alongside HS2, the Government is investing heavily in the conventional rail network. Network Rail will invest £37.5 billion in the UK's rail infrastructure in Control Period 5 (2014-19).
