HM Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS) administers First-tier Tribunal Mental Health (FtT MH) cases in England. It is not possible to provide information on the number of cases listed for hearing in 2008, and 2009, as HMCTS only began to record the number of mental health tribunal cases listed for hearing from April 2010.

The data shown in the following table are taken from internal management information and record the number of cases listed for hearing from April 2010. The increase shown is in line with a rise in the number of people detained under the Mental Health Act 1983 over the same period.

Hearings listed
  Number of hearings
2010-11 28,698
2011-12 31,215
2012-13 32,055
