To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs what steps he is taking to ensure appropriate labelling of meat that has come from animals who have not been stunned due to ritual slaughtering.

We are currently awaiting the results of an EU Commission study on method of slaughter labelling and will look at what options are available for providing information to consumers in light of these EU developments. Where any information of this nature is provided voluntarily, it must be accurate and must not be misleading to the consumer.

Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
