Justice written question – answered at on 18 July 2013.
To ask the Secretary of State for Justice how many incidents of smuggling drugs and contraband into prisons were committed by (a) prison staff and (b) non-prison staff in 2012.
Nine directly employed staff (prison staff) were convicted for smuggling drugs and contraband into prisons in 2012 and nine non-directly employed (non-prison staff) were convicted for smuggling drugs and contraband into prisons in 2012.
NOMS will always deal robustly with any member of prison staff engaging in any form of staff corruption, including the conveying of prohibited items into prisons, and will look to use internal disciplinary and/or criminal proceedings depending on the circumstances of the case.
