To ask the Secretary of State for International Development whether her Department has a current Welsh language scheme; when that scheme was adopted; and whether it has been reviewed since May 2011.

DFID does not have a Welsh language scheme.

Welsh Language

The language of Wales spoken by around 25% of the population. It is an Indo-European language and belongs to the Celtic group. It was made "offical" in Wales by the Welsh Language Act 1993. It is known in Welsh as Cymraeg.

Secretary of State

Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
