Attorney-General written question – answered at on 3 June 2013.
To ask the Attorney-General if he will make an assessment of the likely effect on the volume of shoplifting cases that will still be handled by the Crown Prosecution Service of the Government's decision to allow the police to prosecute shoplifting cases of less than £200.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) will continue to prosecute all contested cases of shoplifting of goods valued at £200 or less, and will also prosecute all cases of shoplifting, both contested and uncontested, where the value is over £200. The Home Office estimates that this will account for approximately 37% of all shoplifting cases, or around 30,000 cases a year.
