Energy and Climate Change written question – answered at on 15 May 2013.
To ask the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change with reference to the answer of 25 February 2013, Official Report, column 238W, on energy, what estimate his Department has made of the number of households that will be moved to a cheaper energy tariff as a result of the proposals contained in the Energy Bill.
Under our proposals suppliers would have to move customers off poor value dead tariffs. In their retail market review, Ofgem have estimated that there are over 650 dead tariffs and we would expect more to be created as a result of the introduction of a tariff cap. Whether or not these are of poor value so that a customer is moved to a cheaper tariff will depend on the tariffs a supplier is offering at that point. This will be a commercial decision for each supplier.
