Home Department written question – answered at on 15 April 2013.
To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what checks are made to determine that the UK is a country of residence for non-EU nationals.
Immigration or residence status determines a non-EEA migrant's eligibility to apply for work, benefits and certain public services in the UK. Employers, Government Departments and local authorities conduct entitlement and right to work checks under a range of legislation regulating access. The Government is introducing biometric residence permits to non-EEA nationals granted permission to stay in the UK for more than six months to make these checks more effective.
