To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what reports he has received on (a) the number of people in prison in India who have been sentenced to death and (b) the proportion of those sentenced to death who are (i) Sikh and (ii) political prisoners.

Publicly available figures indicate that there are 476 individuals who have been sentenced to death in India. The Government have received no reports on the breakdown of this figure by religion.

Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
