As at 31 January 2013 there are around 570 people (full-time equivalents) in the Department for Education engaged directly in work related to academy schools. This includes staff working in the Education Funding Agency. The DFE staff working on the academies programme are based on 10 sites-Bristol, Coventry, Darlington, Guildford, Histon, London, Manchester, Nottingham, Runcorn, Sheffield.

There are other staff in the department who make a contribution, both to policy development and to programme delivery related to academy schools as part of their wider role.
