Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs written question – answered at on 25 February 2013.
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will raise with his Indian counterpart the issue of ensuring that Dalits are prioritised in the strengthening of safety measures for women and girls in India following the recent gang rape and death of a 23 year old student in New Delhi.
The Government is aware of the particular concerns around the treatment of Dalit women, including the trafficking and sexual exploitation of Dalit women and girls. We will continue to raise these issues with appropriate authorities at national and state level and also through the EU/India Human Rights Dialogue.
We note that the report of the Justice Verma Committee on sexual violence against women in India recommends that strong action is taken against those found guilty of trafficking women and children. We are encouraged by the Indian Government's positive response to the recommendations of the Verma Committee. We will continue to follow closely the implementation of its recommendations.
