To ask Her Majesty's Government whether the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence's High Specialised Technologies programme will consider the affordability of ultra-orphan medicines.

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) is currently engaging with stakeholders on the process it will use in the evaluation of such technologies and will formally consult on the process and methods in due course. We understand that NICE will publish an interim process to allow an early start on the evaluation of eculizumab for atypical haemolytic uraemic syndrome after April 2013.
