International Development written question – answered at on 21 January 2013.
To ask the Secretary of State for International Development what steps her Department is taking to ensure safe access to sanitation services for women in developing countries.
As part of a significant scale-up of work on water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), the Department for International Development (DFID) is ensuring that women and girls continue to be prioritised in the design and delivery of water and sanitation programmes. In our support to WASH in schools we are also ensuring that sufficient separate facilities are provided for girls, including facilities to help them manage their menstrual hygiene safely and with privacy.
We offer women and girls a strong voice in how WASH projects are delivered, for instance through women's membership of local WASH decision-making committees. In our reporting we give gender-specific data wherever possible.
