To ask the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government what assessment he has made of the effect of local government spending reductions on charities.
We have made no such assessment. Local spending decisions are a matter for local councils. Good local authorities will be working with their local voluntary and community sector to make best use of their ability to deliver effective and innovative local services that people want.
In order to tackle the deficit left by the last Administration, we know that local authorities are faced with difficult decisions, which is why, in September 2011, this Department published the Best Value guidance which provides clear guidance as to the way they should work with the voluntary sector when facing those decisions.
The Government is committed to creating greater opportunities for the sector through opening up public services and supporting more intelligent commissioning through initiatives like the Social Value Act and the new Commissioning Academy. And the Community Rights contained in the Localism Act are also providing greater prospects for local communities and organisations to transform and shape their own local places and services.
