To ask the Secretary of State for Health what recent assessment he has made of the capacity of accident and emergency departments in hospitals in the North East Ambulance Service area; and what steps he is taking to ensure they have the capacity to treat promptly patients admitted by emergency ambulance.

The Department has made no assessment of the capacity of accident and emergency departments in hospitals in the North East Ambulance Service area. It is for local NHS trusts to ensure capacity when patients are admitted to hospital by emergency ambulance, and to have strategies and procedures in place to cope with unexpected periods of increased pressure.

Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
