To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport pursuant to the answer of 4 September 2012, Official Report, column 217W, on broadband: rural areas, what recent progress she has made on EU state aid approval for BDUK spending on rural broadband schemes.

Officials from the Department met with the European Commission on 6 September 2012 and continue to work with the Commission to clarify details on the UK umbrella notification; we anticipate a Commission decision, in time to allow projects to receive state aid clearance through the proposed BDUK State Aid National Competency Centre, in the autumn.
